Air Conditioners
Tips to help you get ready as we head into the cooling season.
1. Remove the COVER from your Air Conditioner before starting the unit.
2. Check to ensure that the outdoor unit is level - frost sometimes moves the ground under the unit causing it to move.
3. Remove any debris from the unit such as leaves, branches or paper that might have gotten into the unit over the winter.
4. Turn on the outdoor electrical disconnect that feeds electricity to the outdoor unit. (Units older than 10 years may not have this.)
5. Turn on the electrical breaker in the electrical panel for the unit 12 hours before starting the unit. This allows the oil in the compressor to warm up and be less viscous from sitting over the winter.
6. Set the thermostat as high as you find comfortable. The typical winter setting of 21ºC / 70ºF is very likely too chilly for the summer - consider 25ºC / 77ºF for hot weather. Remember: the greater the difference between the temperature outdoors and the temperature indoors, the higher your energy costs will be!
7. Running your furnace fan during hot weather is one of the most effective and efficient ways to keep your home comfortable. The circulation of air helps to prevent the cold air from settling in the lower levels making for more even temperatures throughout. For people with newer furnaces that have DC-Blower motors this only costs pennies a day. (To learn more about DC-Blower motors and how they can help you, please give our office a call or email us
8. Ceiling or portable fans help circulate cool air in the house - you won't need to set the central air as low to feel comfortable.
9. Keep the blinds and curtains closed during the day on the sunny side of the house.
10. Outdoors, its a good idea to plant trees or shrubs to shade air conditioning units, but do not block the air flow and be sure to clear away leaves or debris frequently.
11. Seal leaks around doors, windows, and electrical outlets to prevent heat from getting in. By sealing the leaks you can save up to 20% on your cooling bill and the cost of materials can be well under $20.
12. If you're on holidays, remember to set the air conditioner higher (27-28ºC) while you area away so that a limited amount of dehumidifying will take place.
13. Consider replacing an older central A/C unit. Today's models offer much higher efficiencies and should have a higher SEER rating than your current model and can save up to 40% of your cooling costs and with electricity cost today that can mean big savings. Remember to look for the ENERGY STAR® label!
